Maritime Logistics

This research project addresses the optimal routing and scheduling of cargo ships as well as the optimization of cargo handling processes at seaports. We develop optimization models and solution methods to obtain high quality solutions for complex optimization problems. These solutions support a best possible utilization of ship capacity and terminal resources like cranes and berth space.

Green Logistics

This research project addresses the environmental impact of freight transportation. We develop network design models and routing algorithms for freight, which consider traditional measures, like cost or time, and greenhouse gas emissions. Our solutions support the research in the field of green logistics and show trade-offs between traditional and emission-oriented objectives.

Mobility Concepts

Recent societal trends and technological advances allow for alternative ways of transporting people and freight. The aim of this research project is to evaluate the benefit of such mobility concepts based on computer experiments in which we employ optimization methods in simulated environments. This research project consists of two streams, one dealing with the integration of different sharing economy concepts and the other dealing with the coordination of autonomous public transport systems.

Scheduling and Routing of Multi-Skilled Workforce

The efficient workforce management is crucial for the prosperity of many service-oriented companies. The importance of an effective workforce planning is increasing by the fact that the companies often provide complex services requiring specialists with different qualifications and experience levels. In addition, the services have to be provided at geographically dispersed customer locations. This project adresses the problem of creating and routing of multi-skilled teams. The aim of this project is to develop models and algorithms for an effective management and scheduling of workforce and improvement of services offered to customers.

Supply Network Design and Supplier Development

This project investigates location decisions, capacity decisions, inventory management and supplier selection decisions for complex production-distribution networks. We consider in particular, how lead time restrictions drive the design of supply networks and how inventories should be dimensioned for complex distributed production and distribution networks. Furthermore, we investigate how to improve supplier capabilities by initiating supplier development projects.

Flottendimensionierung und Einsatzplanung autonomer E-Fahrzeuge im ländlichen Raum

Im Rahmen dieses Forschungsprojekts soll untersucht werden, wie ein innovatives Mobilitätsdienstleistungssystem zu gestalten ist, welches durch den Einsatz autonomer Elektrofahrzeuge zu einer Verbesserung der Angebotssituation im ländlichen Raum beiträgt. Hierbei wird ein plattformbasiertes System betrachtet, bei dem ein Anbieter eine Flotte derartiger Fahrzeuge für eine Region bereitstellt und diese zur Erfüllung von Mobilitätsanfragen der Nutzer einsetzt. Hauptgegenstand des Forschungsprojektes sind Fragen der Gestaltung geeigneter Fahrzeugflotten sowie der zugehörigen Einsatzplanung der Fahrzeuge mit dem Ziel, ein leistungsfähiges Mobilitätsdienstleistungssystem bereitzustellen.

Short description:

In the proposed research project, we investigate the design of an innovative mobility service system that offers mobility services by autonomous, electric vehicles in rural areas. We consider a platform-based mobility service system, where a company provides a fleet of such vehicles for a region and uses these vehicles for fulfilling customer requests. The project will focus on questions addressing a suitable dimensioning of vehicle fleets together with an effective vehicle operations management with the goal to establish an efficient mobility service system.
